Tip for the Top

Who’s got the monkey on their back?

How often have you heard yourself say, when a colleague or subordinate comes to you with a problem, "okay, leave it with me, I’ll give it some thought"? Who’s now got the monkey on their back?

Not only have you made more work for yourself by agreeing to deal with it, you have taken the initiative away from the problem giver. To be an effective manager, you must not only control your time but also the content of what you do. Next time, think how you might help the individual without the problem becoming yours. Say to yourself "When this meeting is over, the problem will leave this office exactly the way it came in – on the individual’s back". Help and support, but don’t let it become YOUR problem alone.
