Appraisal
Performance appraisal is an important tool in aiding organisations to manage individuals and improve productivity. The process is designed to create a channel of communication between the employee and their manager allowing for open discussions and review of the employee's work over a given time period. In addition to feedback from the line manager, a 360 degree review provides an excellent method of obtaining feedback from peers or subordinates.
Successful performance appraisals not only review past behaviour but also set objectives enabling the individual to develop and improve their performance in the future. To achieve a positive experience it is vital that line managers are equipped with the necessary skills to undertake the task.
An effective appraisal relies upon the manager being properly prepared for the meeting and having given consideration to the key points that need to be discussed. The employee must also have had opportunity to prepare for the meeting and the adoption of a self assessment form can provide a useful structure to this process.
The manager's ability to listen, appropriately question and provide constructive feedback during the assessment is essential in ensuring a positive experience for the employee.
